A small selection of the hundreds of plans that have been drawn up over the last few years. I always feel especially grateful to those lovely clients who keep me in the loop and let me follow their landscaping and gardening journey. Developing a garden is not usually instantaneous, and many choose to establish a site over many years, so I love to see how they progress down the track.

The making of a garden

A lot can be done with the right plan, some DIY and time, even with a small budget. The film below is of my own heritage style garden coming to life over the span of four years. All done by hand with the exception of drainage works, a new fence and garden path.

2024 Resene Display Home of the Year - Best Landscaping, Jennian Homes, Ashburton

A show stopper textural contemporary garden for Jennian Homes in Strowan Fields, beautifully implemented by JNK Landscapes. The Panicle Hydrangea, Eddies White Wonder Dogwood & Lomandra ‘White Sands’ are a stunning but classic combination. This garden won the 2024 Resene Display Home of the Year - Best Landscaping Winner.

Structured Seasonal Garden, Rangiora

A garden for an avid plant collector and garden enthusiast settling into a new home, working with existing concrete terraces, fences & archgola along with a collection of plants existing plants that needed planting or rearranging. The goal was to create a colourful, seasonal garden with structure and reasonably low maintenance. Landscaping implemented beautifully by Sculptural Landscapes.

Character Filled Colourful Garden, Rangiora

A character filled and colourful garden for a lovely west coast client. Designed in 2022, and photographed in 2024, this much loved garden has been implemented in stages and adapted over time as plants have been found or gifted and thoughtfully added. I love the Whitebeam trees surrounding the house, along with the bright pop of yellow that she has chosen to contrast the modern architecture! House by Greenland Homes & garden initially implemented by Styx Property Care.

Characterful Waikuku Beach Garden

A complete refresh for a well used but tired coastal & rural garden. A new level deck replaced an old multilevel stamped concrete terrace, with plenty of space for a spa pool and seating, stepping down to a new lounge area and fire pit. This set up is perfect for outdoor entertainment with many options for hosting friends & family. The timber decking, riverstone baskets and pavers provides a contemporary look and the combination of evergreen planting along with the tall plumes of the miscanthus grass provide seasonal interest.

A Modern Courtyard Garden for a Beautifully Updated Workers Cottage

This garden is designed alongside (and for) good friends of mine, a talented architect and engineer, Catherine Ellen Architecture and Design, to pair with their beautifully renovated heritage workers cottage. This couple are very DIY savvy and have largely built the deck, raised beds, seating and garden themselves (and designed & built the very cool built in seat on the deck), and as for most gardens, it is a work in progress. Updated photos to come soon!

Halswell Native Garden

Designed in 2019 for an outdoor enthusiast who is passionate about cooking & growing their own food. While there were a few established trees on site (including the large pittosporum & akeake), a row of roses and a couple of concrete patios, this section was largely a blank slate. Structure was established, with a new outdoor living area and wood burning BBQ, along with a sleeper edged lawn, native borders, a screened kitchen garden with fruit trees & berries and a ‘forest floor walk’ to be viewed from the main indoor living spaces. A great space to enjoy!

Ashburton Villa Garden

This was my own much loved garden, which was established by hand from 2020 - 2024, and although no formal plan was drawn up for its development (as us creatives tend to bend the rules for our own houses & gardens), there was a strong vision in mind! As time allowed it was added to bit by bit and came into its own as a wonderful seasonal, colourful and rustic garden to suit the heritage home and site. A lot was learnt through its development and it gave me plenty of opportunity to experiment and learn new skills.
